This summer, the Minions are all set to hit the screen! The first film, Despicable Me, was released in 2010 and grossed over $543 million worldwide. The sequel Despicable Me 2, which was released in 2013, grossed almost $971 million worldwide. The prequel film Minions was released in 2015 and earned $1.159 billion at the global box office. Minions 2 is set for 2020. There have also been a number of short films, video games, books and theme park attractions set around Gru’s little yellow helpers with the odd voices.
The film is once again brought to the screen by Illuminaton, the folks behind the likes of the first two Despicable Me movies, the spin-off Minions, and of course the more recent Sing. The animated film is produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and executive produced by Chris Renaud. It is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, co-directed by Eric Guillon, and written by Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio. The new film continues the adventures of Gru, Lucy, their adorable daughters--Margo, Edith and Agnes as well as the new character Balthazar Bratt played by Trey Parker (South Park, “The Book of Mormon”)—and the Minions. Despicable Me 3, directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, co-directed by Eric Guillon, and written by Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio, will be released in UK cinemas on June 30th, 2017. It features Steve Carell pulling double duty, voicing both Gru and Gru’s wildly excitable brother, Dru, in a story that finds Gru unemployed and looking for a new gig. Thankfully, there’s always room for villainy – and that’s where Gru’s brother Dru comes in! After he is fired from the Anti-Villain League for failing to take down the latest bad guy to threaten humanity, Gru finds himself in the midst of a major identity crisis. But when a mysterious stranger shows up to inform Gru that he has a long-lost twin brother—a brother who desperately wishes to follow in his twin’s despicable footsteps—one former super-villain will rediscover just how good it feels to be bad. Kristen Wiig returns as super-spy Lucy, while Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award winner Trey Parker voices new villain Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who has become obsessed with the evil TV character he played in the ’80s. Gru’s most formidable and comedic nemesis to date, Bratt is out to take down Hollywood…and anyone who stands in his way. Oh, and for the music fans-- Pharrell Williams is returning for the ‘Despicable Me 3’ soundtrack! Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/ producer Pharrell Williams is returning for Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), available everywhere June 23 via i am Other Entertainment/Columbia Records Pharrell has just released “Yellow Light,” one of five brand new original tracks he wrote and produced for the film. Another original Pharrell song made for Despicable Me 3, “There’s Something Special,” perfectly captures the tone of the series. Additionally, Pharrell’s anthemic “Freedom” serves as the perfect backdrop as the Minions plot their escape from prison in the film. So, know anyone who’s a fan?
